Savannah Guthrie and Jenna Bush Hager share a close bond both on and off the air, and their playful antics often make for unforgettable moments on Today.

One of their favorite pastimes? Getting under the skin of their longtime co-host, Al Roker.
The duo’s latest mischief was recently revealed when Savannah appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show,
where she shared how their singing habits have become a source of both entertainment and frustration for Al.

A Musical Prank That Drives Al Roker Crazy

During the interview, Kelly Clarkson brought up the amusing behind-the-scenes dynamic among the Today show cast.

“So, I heard that you and Jenna were doing something to annoy Al?” Kelly asked with a knowing smile. “What was it, singing?”
Savannah, never one to shy away from a good joke, immediately laughed. “I mean, that’s like every day,” she admitted. “But yes… we really love to sing, which is different than saying we can sing—but we think we can.”
The audience erupted in laughter as a clip played of Savannah and Jenna belting out Islands in the Stream directly into Al’s ear. The beloved weatherman, clearly unimpressed, groaned and begged them to stop. His exaggerated reactions only encouraged them to keep going, much to the delight of their fellow anchors and viewers.
Savannah couldn’t help but poke fun at their lack of vocal talent. “It just gets worse and worse because we think we sound great, and now he’s just hiding,” she joked.
Keeping the Chaos in Check
The Today crew has apparently learned to keep Savannah and Jenna apart when necessary, in an effort to prevent their spontaneous performances. “They’re like, ‘Don’t sit together, those two,’” Savannah said, explaining that their co-hosts try to minimize the musical chaos.
Kelly, clearly enjoying the story, laughed and said, “It makes great television.” Savannah quickly agreed, adding, “Thank you—not exactly on key!”
Despite the playful ribbing, the dynamic between Savannah, Jenna, and Al is built on years of friendship and mutual respect. The trio has spent countless hours together on Today, creating memorable moments for viewers while maintaining a fun-loving relationship behind the scenes.
A Bond Beyond the Studio
Beyond their work on Today, Savannah and Jenna have formed a close friendship that extends to their families. Their daughters, Vale and Mila, share a special bond, and the two families frequently spend time together outside of work.

One particularly touching moment occurred during a Today segment when Vale appeared in a video to interview her mom about her upcoming book release. The heartfelt surprise brought Jenna to tears as she reflected on their deep friendship.
“I want to weep because I’ve known Vale-y every day since she was born,” Jenna said emotionally. “Many of us have. But also, I’m so lucky to be her godmother.”
Jenna went on to express her admiration for Savannah’s parenting and the values she has passed down to her children. “Everything you’ve given to them, all of your faith that you’ve passed down so gently, without preaching, without demanding, are in those little kids. And when the world feels dark, that is hope,” she said through tears.
Their families have also enjoyed vacations together, including a 2024 getaway to Palm Beach. Jenna revealed that the trip had been planned well in advance, sparked by a touching moment between their daughters. “We planned it because Vale was baptized. And Mila said, ‘Girls, I feel like we need a girls’ trip,’” Jenna shared.
A Tough Time for Al Roker
While Savannah and Jenna’s antics bring plenty of laughter, their Today co-anchor Al Roker has been navigating a difficult personal loss. In February, his ex-wife, Alice Bell, passed away at the age of 77. The two had been married for several years before divorcing, and they shared a daughter, Courtney, whom they adopted in 1987.
Following Alice’s passing, Courtney paid tribute to her mother in a heartfelt Instagram post. “She was my mother, my heart, and the most loving grandmother to Sky,” she wrote alongside several touching photos. “I was with her for her last breath, and I will carry her love with me always.”

Al has not spoken publicly in detail about Alice’s passing, but it is evident that his family has been leaning on one another during this difficult time.
The Today Family Dynamic
Despite the ups and downs of life, the Today show family remains as strong as ever. Whether it’s Savannah and Jenna lightheartedly teasing Al, or their emotional reflections on friendship and faith, the bonds among the co-hosts run deep.
Savannah and Jenna’s playful antics may drive Al Roker up the wall, but as Kelly Clarkson put it best: “It makes great television.” And for viewers at home, it’s just another reason to love the Today show crew.
