Fox News’ “The Five” saw a heated exchange between panelists Jessica Tarlov

and Jesse Watters over recent claims regarding billionaire Elon Musk’s financial ties to government contracts.
The dispute stemmed from social media rumors and remarks made during a House Oversight Committee subcommittee hearing
that suggested Musk was earning a staggering $8 million per day from federal agreements.

The controversy arose after Texas Democrat Rep. Greg Casar raised concerns during the February 12 hearing, stating,

“Do you know how much money a day Mr. Musk will receive from the federal government? The answer is $8 million a day.

Just last year, he was promised $3 billion from close to 100 contracts with the federal government.”
While this claim spread quickly across social media, a White House official later refuted the accuracy of the figure but did not offer a concrete alternative.
A Heated Debate on “The Five”
During Thursday’s segment of “The Five,” Jessica Tarlov, a Democratic strategist, shared her perspective on the allegations, arguing that such revelations signaled a strong point for Democrats in ongoing political debates.
“I think this is a positive sign for Democrats because there seems to be a bit of coalescing around a message that resonates,” Tarlov began. “Hakeem Jeffries gave a press conference today, and he had up two signs. One of them says ‘Elon Musk is making $8 million a day in government contracts. The average Medicaid recipient gets $65 a day.’”
As she continued discussing Speaker Mike Johnson’s proposed spending bill, Jesse Watters made his disinterest clear by dramatically yawning off-camera. Annoyed by his reaction, Tarlov snapped, “Why are you—? This actually matters to people.”

Mocking her remarks, Watters sarcastically responded, “This is a great new message, and I’m bored,” while flapping his hands. Frustrated by his dismissal, Tarlov retorted, “You get bored the second I open my mouth!”
Despite Watters’ interruptions, Tarlov pressed on, arguing that Musk’s alleged earnings contrasted sharply with Republican-led spending cuts that could impact essential programs. “It does matter that someone who is supposed to be rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse is making $8 million a day while they want to cut your Medicaid,” she asserted.
She also referenced Republican Senator Josh Hawley’s opposition to the spending bill, noting that he highlighted concerns about Medicaid cuts affecting 21% of his state’s population. “You know how serious the threat is because Josh Hawley, of all people, is saying that he will not allow that spending bill to go through the Senate,” she added.
Public Reactions to the Debate
As expected, the debate sparked a wave of reactions online, with many viewers siding with Watters’ dismissive attitude. Several critics took to social media to express their frustration with Tarlov’s argument, questioning the credibility of the claims regarding Musk’s government payouts.
One user on X (formerly Twitter), @Airmale182, voiced their irritation, writing, “For the love of all things tolerable, can someone @FoxNews find an opposition advocate that can make something other than a ridiculous argument? She’s exhausting to listen to and requires an immediate change of the channel.”

Another user, @DogRightGirl, outright rejected the claims about Medicaid, stating, “This is a flat-out lie. There are ZERO cuts to Medicaid. You are a pathetic liar.”
Others called for Tarlov to be removed from the show entirely, with @ju31815 writing, “Fox needs to show you the door!” Meanwhile, @CowboyPolitics_ accused her of spreading misinformation, saying, “You LIAR, there’s not one cut to Medicaid in the bill. Anyone can search the document and find out for themselves. You libs are all the same, pathetic liars.”
Ongoing Controversy Surrounding Musk’s Earnings
Elon Musk has yet to personally comment on the debate or the specific claims regarding his alleged earnings from federal contracts. However, his companies, including SpaceX and Tesla, have long been involved in government projects, particularly in defense, space exploration, and infrastructure development.
While the $8 million per day figure remains disputed, the larger conversation about government spending, corporate subsidies, and social welfare programs is likely to persist as a focal point in political discourse. Whether or not the claims hold weight, the sharp divide in opinions showcased on “The Five” reflects the ongoing battle over financial priorities in Washington.
As the investigation into federal contracts continues, both Democrats and Republicans will likely use the debate to bolster their respective narratives on government waste and economic fairness. Meanwhile, Tarlov and Watters’ fiery exchange serves as yet another example of how contentious political discussions have become in today’s media landscape.
