Sian Welby from This Morning was discovered to have used a counterfeit diploma to secure a position as a presenter on ITV. “Even the higher-ups were aware but decided to overlook it.”

Sian Welby has become a familiar face on This Morning, but her path to success was far from easy.

The 38-year-old presenter recently opened up about the struggles she faced throughout her career,

revealing that her accent and competition from reality stars often stood in the way of her television ambitions.

However, after years of perseverance and dedication, she finally secured her dream role on This Morning, proving that hard work and determination pay off.

Struggles in the Industry

Sian, who hails from Nottingham, has always dreamed of working on This Morning.

However, she found herself frequently overlooked for television roles due to her accent and the industry’s preference for trending reality stars.

Speaking about her journey, she admitted, “In my career, I’ve had reality stars overtake me. You lose out on opportunities because they’re hot right now, or they weren’t looking for someone like me with my accent or whatever the thing was. But I had to wait my turn.”

Despite these setbacks, Sian remained committed to her goal, willing to take on any role to prove her capabilities. She was determined to show industry professionals that she was more than just a weather presenter, a title she held for several years before breaking into mainstream entertainment.

Fighting for Her Dream Job

Sian’s relentless work ethic eventually caught the attention of This Morning producers. She recalled telling two female producers that she was willing to take on any assignment, no matter how unconventional. “I said, send me to Bognor Regis beach at 2am or get me dressed up as a Smurf in the middle of Skegness, I will do it. I just really wanted to work on the show.” Her dedication paid off, and she was soon given the opportunity to cover various segments, including live reports and competitions.

Her big break came when she stepped in for Lisa Snowdon, proving that she could handle live television effortlessly. This led to an invitation to co-host with Dermot O’Leary, marking a significant turning point in her career. After a successful stint alongside Dermot in early 2023, she was welcomed into the This Morning family, joining the ranks of well-known presenters such as Alison Hammond, Rochelle Humes, Craig Doyle, Ben Shephard, and her childhood idol, Cat Deeley.

Balancing Career and Motherhood

While achieving her long-held dream, Sian was also navigating the challenges of new motherhood. She gave birth to her first daughter, Ruby, in June 2023, with her fiancé, Jake Beckett, a producer on the Capital breakfast show. Juggling her demanding career and motherhood, Sian admitted to experiencing moments of overwhelming exhaustion.

“Some days it is overwhelming and hard. I am not a quitter; I’m very motivated, and I don’t like anyone telling me that I can’t do something. And yet, I have to admit to myself some days that I can’t physically do everything,” she shared.

With early morning starts at Capital Breakfast and dashing between radio and TV commitments, Sian described her schedule as relentless. “There are days when I have a 4am alarm, go into Capital, run across London to This Morning, then sometimes a junket and then home to do teatime and bath time.”

Despite the challenges, she believes women can balance career and motherhood with the right support. “Right now, my other half is off work and is almost doing shared maternity leave. He’s been with Ruby, so I know she’s with her dad, which makes it a bit easier. But it is still really, really hard, and you are on the verge of an exhaustion breakdown.”

Rising Star in the Television Industry

Sian’s hard work has undoubtedly paid off, and her career continues to flourish. She has interviewed Hollywood A-listers, including Margot Robbie and Tom Cruise, and was even considered as a potential replacement for Holly Willoughby before Cat Deeley secured the role.

Although stepping into the This Morning spotlight was nerve-wracking, Sian was pleasantly surprised by the support she received from viewers. “I was expecting backlash with people saying, ‘Who on earth is this girl?’ But I was so shocked and overwhelmed with just how nice everyone was. I wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I’ve had such a supportive reaction from women and mums. I was just praying people would give me a chance.”

Ambitions for the Future

Sian isn’t stopping at This Morning. Her recent hosting gig at the BRIT Awards red carpet was a full-circle moment, as she recalled attending the event a decade ago as a friend’s plus-one, unable to walk the red carpet. “Fast-forward to last year with Capital doing the red carpet and this year actually working for the BRITs and being fully glammed and access all areas, it’s amazing.”

Looking ahead, Sian has her sights set on becoming one of the leading faces of British television. “I would love to get to a point where I am one of the faces of TV. I want to do a Saturday night show and be in that world. I have a taste of it with This Morning, and I really do feel ready to be given the chance on a big TV show.”

Her journey proves that perseverance and determination can lead to success, even in an industry where competition is fierce. Sian Welby has not only overcome obstacles but has also cemented herself as a rising star in British television, inspiring aspiring presenters to chase their dreams no matter the challenges they face.
