Alan Titchmarsh, widely known for his expertise in gardening, has taken on a heartwarming new venture with his latest television series, Underdog to Superdog. 

The beloved TV presenter has admitted that the experience has been “astonishingly emotional,” 

as he witnesses the transformation of dogs from all backgrounds with the help of dedicated specialists.

The series follows a variety of canines, each with their own challenges, as they undergo training and care to help them reach their full potential. 

For Alan, the journey has been unexpectedly touching, as he found himself deeply moved by the stories of both the dogs and their owners.

When asked about what surprised him most during the production, the 75-year-old revealed: “In a way, it was the fact that I became so emotional on behalf of the owners.” 

His empathy for their struggles and triumphs made the series even more poignant for him.

Alan admitted that his emotional sensitivity has only grown with age. “But then I made Love Your Garden, where we gifted people a garden at the end, and people tended to be emotional in these moments, too,” he shared in a recent interview. “Being a parent and a grandparent, the older I get, having children and grandchildren, I’m afraid I weep at the drop of a hat these days. I can watch the silliest film and be in floods of tears, so why wouldn’t I be when something like this happens?”

The veteran broadcaster emphasized how acts of goodness, kindness, and improving lives resonate deeply with him. Seeing the impact of Underdog to Superdog on both the dogs and their owners has only reinforced this sentiment.

Family and Furry Friends

Beyond his career, Alan has always had a strong bond with animals, particularly dogs. Married to his wife Alison since 1975, the couple has two daughters, Polly and Camilla, now in their early forties, and four grandchildren. Dogs have played an essential role in their family life, with Alan reminiscing about how their former Labrador was instrumental in helping his children learn to walk.

“We didn’t have to worry about having a child in the same room as them,” he recalled fondly. “Our children learned to walk holding onto the back of a Labrador – that was Lou with my daughter Polly very early on.”

While Alan and Alison currently don’t have a dog of their own, they still enjoy the company of their daughters’ cockapoos, whom Alan affectionately refers to as his “grand-dogs.” Despite frequent work commitments and traveling, he relishes spending time with them and taking them for walks whenever possible.
