Cheryl faced one of the most heartbreaking days of her life as she bid a final farewell to Liam Payne at his funeral on Wednesday.

The singer, 41, who shares a seven-year-old son, Bear, with the late One Direction star,
was supported by her close friends and Girls Aloud bandmates, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh.
The private funeral service, held in Buckinghamshire, saw family, friends, and notable figures from the music and sports industries come together to pay tribute to Liam,

who tragically passed away at the age of 31. Cheryl, accompanied by Nicola, 39, and Kimberley, 43, walked behind the coffin as they honored his memory.

Lifelong Friendship and Support

Nicola and Kimberley have remained steadfastly by Cheryl’s side in the aftermath of Liam’s passing on October 16.
His death, caused by a fall from a third-floor balcony in Buenos Aires, devastated fans and loved ones alike. Cheryl, Nicola, and Kimberley first met in 2002 on Popstars: The Rivals and have maintained a close bond since Girls Aloud disbanded in 2013.
While the trio has remained inseparable over the years, fellow bandmate Nadine Coyle, 39, who currently resides in the U.S., was notably absent from the service. Though Nadine has admitted she isn’t best friends with the group, she maintains a cordial relationship with them.
From cheering on one another’s career milestones to attending personal celebrations, Cheryl, Nicola, and Kimberley have continually demonstrated their strong friendship. In 2017, Cheryl expressed her appreciation for the two, describing them as “amazing, inspiring, gorgeous souls.”
A Private and Emotional Farewell
The funeral’s location was kept discreet, with local residents only becoming aware of it when “no parking” signs appeared around the church. Guests were dropped at a side entrance and escorted inside through a carefully managed security operation.
Nicola arrived with Simon Jones, One Direction’s former PR manager, who now represents Cheryl. She was greeted warmly by other mourners, who stood outside the church before the service commenced. Kimberley and several other attendees wore sunglasses as they entered, shielding their emotions from the public eye.

A choir and musicians performed at the ceremony, and a floral tribute of bowling pins and a ball was included as a nod to Liam’s love for the sport, which he reportedly played up to four times a week.
Cheryl’s Heartfelt Tribute
Cheryl had previously broken her silence on Liam’s passing with an emotional Instagram tribute, in which she shared her “indescribable pain” at having to explain the tragic news to their young son. Nicola and Kimberley reposted her statement on social media, showing their unwavering support.
Liam’s former One Direction bandmates—Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson—were also present, marking their first public reunion since their last concert in 2015. His girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, 25, attended as well, paying her respects.
A Friendship That Stands the Test of Time
Over the years, Cheryl, Nicola, and Kimberley have consistently supported one another. They have attended each other’s professional engagements, such as Kimberley’s performances in Shrek The Musical and Big The Musical, and Cheryl’s theatrical debut in 2:22 A Ghost Story. Their bond has remained strong even as their careers have taken them on different paths.
The tragic passing of their former Girls Aloud bandmate Sarah Harding in 2021 brought them even closer. When the group embarked on their 2024 reunion tour, they dedicated performances of I’ll Stand By You to Sarah, and later released a charity version of the song featuring her vocals to support BBC Children in Need.

Speaking about the decision to reunite, Cheryl shared, “We had been talking about celebrating our 20-year anniversary, but when Sarah got ill, our priorities changed. Now, it feels like the right time to celebrate Sarah, the band, and the fans.”
Kimberley echoed her sentiments, stating, “Over the last year, we’ve felt an outpouring of love—towards Sarah and towards the group. It feels like the right time to do this.”
Despite past tensions with Nadine, the remaining Girls Aloud members have acknowledged their shared history and impact on fans. Nadine expressed her gratitude for the band’s legacy, saying, “We grew up with the band, and so did so many people. It would be a shame not to do something again.”
Moving Forward
Cheryl, who has remained out of the public eye since Liam’s passing, made her first televised appearance earlier this month to promote the re-release of I’ll Stand By You. The moment was deeply emotional, as the group introduced the song and reflected on its significance.

In the face of personal loss, Cheryl has found solace in the unwavering support of Nicola and Kimberley. Their friendship, built over two decades, continues to stand strong, proving that some bonds truly are unbreakable.
