NBC executives are facing criticism for naming Matthew Russell as the new show producer, with some calling it a serious error.

The Today show has undergone a major leadership shift, with Matthew Russell stepping into the role of Executive Producer for the weekday program.

Russell, who previously led Weekend Today since May 2022, has now been promoted to oversee the flagship morning show, which is hosted by Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo.

In addition to Russell’s appointment, Michael Kersnovske has been confirmed as the new Executive Producer of Weekend Today,

ensuring both programs continue to evolve under new leadership.

A Major Change for Today

Russell’s promotion marks a significant transition for the Today team as it works to navigate recent challenges and changes.

His experience with Weekend Today has prepared him for this step up,

where he will now take charge of the weekday edition, managing editorial direction, content, and the overall production of the show.

Network insiders first confirmed the appointment before an official spokesperson later validated the news.

Kendall Bora’s Departure

Russell steps into the role following the departure of Kendall Bora, who has led the Today team in recent years. Bora is moving on to a new position as head of Nine’s U.S. Bureau, where she will work alongside her husband, former Weekend Sunrise and Channel 7 presenter Matt Doran. Doran is reportedly looking to expand his career in documentary production in the U.S., and Bora’s move will allow her to take on a leadership role overseas.

Her exit creates a major shift in the Today production team, with Russell now tasked with leading the show into its next chapter.

Turbulence at Today

Russell’s promotion comes during a time of upheaval for the Today show, which has been dealing with a number of high-profile challenges. Recently, the show faced controversy surrounding the departure of sports presenter Alex Cullen, who was let go after it was revealed he received a $50,000 payment from billionaire Adrian Portelli.

As part of an effort to stabilize the show’s lineup, Danika Mason was brought in as part of the ongoing restructuring of the Today team. Her appointment signals an attempt to refresh the program’s sports coverage and regain audience confidence.

Meanwhile, Weekend Today has also experienced significant changes. Sophie Walsh, who joined the program as co-host just six months ago, departed under unclear circumstances. Last week, Alison Piotrowski was quietly confirmed as her replacement, now joining Clint Stanaway as the new co-hosting duo for the weekend edition.

Russell’s Transition to the Weekday Show

Russell’s departure from Weekend Today was acknowledged on air during Sunday’s broadcast, with host Clint Stanaway playfully commenting on the move. Stanaway noted that Russell didn’t want attention drawn to his exit but quipped that he was “putting on his big boy pants” and moving on to the weekday show.

As Executive Producer of Today, Russell will now be responsible for shaping the show’s future, refining its editorial direction, and managing its production team. With the morning show landscape constantly evolving and audience expectations shifting, his leadership will play a crucial role in determining Today’s success in the coming months.

What’s Next for Today?

With a fresh Executive Producer at the helm and new on-air talent in place, the Today team is looking to rebuild and strengthen its position in the competitive morning television market. Russell’s leadership will be tested as he navigates the ongoing transitions within the show, aiming to deliver engaging and dynamic content that resonates with viewers.

The Today show remains a staple of Australian morning television, and under Russell’s guidance, it will work to solidify its place as a leading morning news and entertainment program.
