Authorities in Santa Fe, New Mexico, have yet to determine the cause of death for legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, following their unexpected passing. 

However, preliminary autopsy results have ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning as a factor, according to Sheriff Adan Mendoza, who is leading the investigation.

Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 65, were discovered in their home on February 26 by maintenance workers who had not seen the couple for approximately two weeks. 

Upon arrival, law enforcement noted that there were no immediate signs of foul play. The condition of the bodies suggested they had been deceased for several days, if not longer.

Examination Reveals No Signs of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

During a press conference, Sheriff Mendoza disclosed that initial findings from the medical examiner found no traces of carbon monoxide in the couple’s bodies. 

Carbon monoxide poisoning, which can result from poor ventilation of fuel-burning appliances, had been a suspected cause but was ultimately ruled out.

Further investigation revealed that Hackman’s pacemaker ceased functioning on February 17, indicating that he may have passed away over a week before his body was discovered. However, officials have yet to confirm whether his death occurred precisely at that time.

Details of the Scene and Autopsy Findings

Hackman was found collapsed in an entryway, while Arakawa was discovered in a bathroom. Near her body, investigators found an open prescription bottle with pills scattered on the counter, as well as a space heater that had likely been knocked over when she fell. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the medications or any substances played a role in the couple’s deaths. Toxicology tests are ongoing and are expected to provide more answers in the coming weeks.

Dr. Philip Keen, a retired medical examiner, noted that while a pacemaker stopping can indicate the time of death, it is not a definitive marker, as some individuals have pacemakers to support heart function rather than replace it entirely.

Dr. Victor Weedn, a forensic pathologist, added that the absence of external trauma on both bodies does not rule out natural causes or underlying medical conditions that could have contributed to their passing.

Investigators Searching for Additional Clues

Authorities are piecing together a timeline of the couple’s last known activities, including reviewing their cell phones, monthly planners, and speaking with neighbors and staff from the gated community where they lived. Due to the couple’s private nature, investigators face challenges in determining when they were last seen or spoken to.

There were no apparent security cameras in the home, which limits available footage to aid the investigation. However, a search of the residence uncovered various medications, including those for high blood pressure, thyroid conditions, and pain relief. Additionally, medical records from diagnostic testing were retrieved.

No Gas Leaks Detected in Home

Fire department officials and investigators ruled out gas leaks as a potential cause of death after thoroughly inspecting the property. This leaves medical conditions or other undetermined factors as the likely cause, pending the results of toxicology reports.

The tragic discovery was made when a maintenance worker, unable to access the home, contacted security personnel. Upon spotting the unresponsive couple through a window, security immediately called emergency services.
